About the College

Taiwan Government, Executive Yuan, summed up cross-ministerial ideas to loosen existing regulations and proposed a new updated regulation, “National Key Fields Industry-University Cooperation and Skilled Personnel Training innovative regulation” in 2020, which was passed by Legislative Yuan in May, 2021. The main purpose is to make up the urgent needed shortage of the technology and scientific talents in the national key industrial development fields, and raise the international competitiveness. NSYSU cooperated with government policy, launched a new project cooperated with well-known local enterprises and leading academic professors to draft a curriculum map and research topics aiming to minimize the gap between academic interests and industrial practical needs, which is appreciated and welcome by many high ranking cooperates in Kaohsiung area, and willing to offer big financial support for this science and technology talents education/training program. After reviews by Ministry of education and other ministries in January 2022, the “College of Semiconductor and Advanced Technology Research” was established in NSYSU and stared to take students from 111 academic-year. NSYSU is one of the important higher education bases for key science and technology talents in Taiwan.

The organizing convener and also the first dean of College of Semiconductor and Advanced Technology Research, Professor I-Yu Huang, expressed appreciations for the supporting and funding to Ministry of Education, National Development Fund and the local enterprises. The college each year will educate 80 and 40 master's students in two institutes, Institute of Advanced Semiconductor Packaging and Testing and Institute of Precision Electronic Components. Students have 3-year study programs for the degree. In the First year, they will take course works at university campus. In the second and third years, they will get practical training at factory shop floors in world leading companies. Students have opportunities to enjoy abundant resources and operate state of the arts equipment during practical trainings. They may also apply and awarded scholarship amounts to more than 1 million NT Dollars supported from collaborated corporates, which greatly reduce the financial burden of students, Moreover, upon graduation they will work for the corporate of their choice after matching and competition among peer students (i.e. employed upon graduation).

To support government consolidating midstream semiconductor manufacturing industry, our college set up a new graduate school, “Institute of Innovative Semiconductor Manufacturing”, starts to take students from 112 academic-year. The institute enrolls 25 master's students and 5 PhD students each year. The study plan will be similar to regular master's and PhD degrees, 2-year for master and 4-year for PhD, but there is a special training program at collaborate corporate world class training center in the summer before the first semester. This experience will provide students a complete picture of advanced semiconductor manufacture science and technology, which is very helpful to students’ research and career in the future.

The innovative industry-university cooperating education program is designed to cultivate 1200 master's and PhD students from these three institutes in the coming 10 years. Students are expected to be trained with professional skills that can fully meet the development needs of the national key industries, filling up the existing shortage of scientific and technological talents in Taiwan semiconductor manufacturing, packaging, and electronic components etc. industries to sustain their word leading position. Through the above-mentioned industry-university talent work force cultivation mechanism, our University is expected to strengthen the breadth and depth of university-industry collaboration, furthermore, improve the university technological research effectiveness and efficiency to create a win-win situation for the country, industry, university and students.
